What is a ComedySportz match like?
Two teams battle for laughs and points as they make up scenes, games and songs on the spot, in the spirit of TV's Whose Line Is It Anyway? A referee governs the action, calling fouls and keeping the match moving at a blistering pace. An average of seven to twelve games are played during a ComedySportz match, drawn from a list of over a hundred improv games. Every match is different, with different players, different games, and different audiences supplying new suggestions. The fans judge the scenes and games and ultimately decide the winners and losers. ComedySportz® also asks “willing volunteers” to join us for a game or two each match, and we make them look great! ComedySportz plays in 26+ cities nationwide, in Europe, and now...Boston! We've been answering the call since 1984.
Who should I bring to ComedySportz?
We recommend ages 4 - 104. ComedySportz is perfect for dates, celebrations, a night out on the town, or even quality time with the family, since kids love it as much as grown-ups. The audience of a typical ComedySportz® match contains everyone from kids to college students to parents to grandparents. Everyone has a good time and no one gets offended. If a Player steps beyond the boundaries of good taste, the “brown bag foul” (a brown paper sack placed over the offending player’s head) will be called to set things straight.ComedySportz® even works for tough-to-please business groups.
How long does a ComedySportz match last?
An average ComedySportz match lasts about 1.5 hours.
Can I book in advance?
Yes! You may purchase seats for upcoming match via online or by calling the box office at (617) 231-7006. Subject to availability, you can purchase seats at the door the night of. Door tickets go on sale 30 minutes before the start of the match, but the only way to guarantee seats is to buy online. If you’re interested in bringing a large group (10 or more), having at birthday party at a match, or want to book a private event, simply contact our Box Office at 617-213-7006.
Do you guys tell jokes about sports?
Nope! This is comedy played as a sport. We’re improvisers, so we make up scenes and songs on the spot based on your suggestions. If you suggest “soccer,” we’ll perform a scene about soccer, but if you suggest “pickled pig’s feet,” we’ll do a scene about that, too. The “Sportz” part of our name comes from the competitiveness – there are two teams who try to out-funny each other for votes from you, the Loyal Fans! There are points, a referee, even fouls…but as with all sports, there is only one winner.
Do you guys serve food and/or alcohol?
The Rozzie Square Theater offers concessions (snacks and candy, and cold beverages like juice, coffee, soda and seltzer) for purchase. Inside our building is our neighbors at Delicious Yogurt, for self-serve frozen yogurt and boba tea. We are across the street from the pub Napper Tandy's and blocks down from many restaurants and casual, locally-owned and operated dining options, such as Redd's in Rozzie, Effie's Kitchen, Shanti's, Delfinos, and Sophia's Grotto.
Will I get picked on at your show?
No. A ComedySportz match is interactive – we ask for suggestions and occasionally volunteers – but we never force anyone to participate. Promise.
Is ComedySportz good for groups? (work, school, church, Bachelorette party, birthday party, tour group)
Yes! ComedySportz sets the bar high; no one is offended, everyone laughs, everyone has a good time. In addition to welcoming many different groups at at ComedySportz match, we’ve done matches for groups from 10-3000+ all over the country. We can tailor our event to your space, time, and content requirements. We do holiday shows, fundraisers, church functions, bachelorette parties, and just about anything you can imagine.
